Vacancies in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Astronomy & Astrophysics | Geophysics

The Astronomy & Astrophysics Section of the School of Cosmic Physics, DIAS, has the following vacancies:

Postgraduate Scholarship in the Star Formation Group

DIAS is offering a postgraduate scholarship to work in the star formation group lead by Prof. Tom Ray beginning in September 2010. The funding includes a stipend, postgraduate fees, as well as travel support. The level of the award is commensurate with other national scholarships, e.g. those from IRCSET. The student project will be focused on deep radio observations of jets from young stars using the new e-MERLIN facility in the UK and e-VLA in the US. These facilities will begin operation later this year and DIAS already has key programme time. While the project is strongly focused on observations there will be opportunities to include modelling, for example using MHD jet simulation software developed in-house. A primary degree in physics, or a related field, is mandatory.

Programming skills and experience with data analysis are beneficial. Interested students are encouraged to send a a curriculum vitae to Ms. Eileen Flood, eflood@cp.dias.ie with the names of two referees.

Inquiries can be made to Prof. Tom Ray ( (tr@cp.dias.ie).

Summer Internship Positions

The School of Cosmic Physics is offering a limited number of Summer internship positions for students nearing the end of their undergraduate studies and not yet registered for a higher degree. The positions are intended to allow the recipients to receive practical training in advanced research methods and to experience a research environment. Each student will be mentored by a designated academic staff member and receive a tax-free stipend of Eur 1100 per month (subject to a successful application to the Revenue commissioners). The Internships should be held during the period May-September inclusive.
