September 2010 – Mallet Exhibition at RDS

A major exhibition to mark the bi-centenary of Dubliner Robert Mallet (the ‘father’ of modern geology) and to celebrate his work opened recently at the RDS. Mallet was a scientifically-minded engineer, whose work laid the basis for modern seismology. He performed the first controlled seismic explosions, designed a sensitive seismometer to measure quakes, coined many of the terms we still use – including “seismology” and “epicentre” – and, in the wake of a devastating Italian quake, undertook the first detailed analysis of an earthquake. This exhibition will highlight his leading role in solving critical scientific questions. The exhibition is supported by DIAS, the Heritage Council, and The Irish Times. The exhibition takes place in the RDS library until September 24th. Admission is free and more details can be found at: http://www.rds.ie/index.jsp?p=174&n=200&a=76#Mallet
