Irish Research Council (IRC) Fellowship Scheme

Government of Ireland Fellows hosted by DIAS

DIAS is not involved in determining the research proposal which is the subject of the application to the Irish Research Council (IRC).  As is required under the Scheme, the applicant devises his/her own research proposal and then approaches DIAS to discuss the Institute’s willingness to act as host for the Fellowship in the event of the application being successful.

Any Fellowship that is finally hosted by DIAS is subject to the following conditions:

  1. The Fellowship will be administered by DIAS in accordance with the terms and conditions attaching to the IRC Post-Doctoral Fellowship Scheme as laid down in the Standard Research Agreement.
  2. The Fellow will contribute to the general research effort of the section/research unit to which he/she is assigned. However, the research to be undertaken as part of the Fellowship will be that which was chosen by the Fellow and put forward in his/her application to IRC and which has been accepted by the Council of IRC.
  3. Therefore, whilst the Fellow will be working on a research topic that is consistent with the research work of DIAS, he/she is following an independent work programme. The Fellow is not therefore bound to the research strategy of the relevant DIAS school. The role of the Institute in directing the individual’s research is solely to ensure that he/she carries out the programme of research for which the Fellowship was granted.
  4. The Fellow will be employed by DIAS on a fixed-term contract of employment. The employment of the Fellow by DIAS is solely and exclusively for the purpose of undertaking the programme of research associated with the IRC Fellowship award. The appointment of Fellows by DIAS is subject to approval by the Department of Education and Skills. The Fellowship will not commence until a formal contract of employment is issued by the Institute.
