On June 6th, 2012, at 07:58:13.9 UTC a moderate earthquake Mag 4.0 occurred in the Atlantic Ocean at location 54.151 -10.904, 100 km off Belmullet in Co Mayo.
Several people have reported feeling this event and there are some reports of minor structural damage, which have not been confirmed.
There is no previous history of seismic events in this area. The largest earthquake felt in Ireland occurred on the 19th July, 1984 with a Mag 5.4, and was located off the coast of Wales. It also caused minor structural damage on the East Coast of Ireland The seismic waves generated by this earthquake was recorded by the Irish National Seismic Network, at our stations in Donegal, Dublin, Galway Wexford and Kerry, see accompanying .jpg file.
