Title: Using joint inversion to improve sub-basalt and sub-salt imaging

Abstract:

Imaging complex geological structures, particularly sub-basalt and sub-salt sediments, is a challenging problem for seismic methods alone. Due to the strong impedance contrast between the overlying sediments and the top of the salt/basalt most of the energy does not penetrate below. A number of recent studies have shown that combining seismics with other methods such as EM or gravity can improve the situation. We present our experiences with using different joint inversion approaches to image sub-salt and sub-basalt sediments. We will compare different coupling mechanisms to combine the various methods and show possible future avenues.
