The golden age of transient astronomy
Wide field optical surveys are presently surveying significant fractions of the sky each night, and are revealing a diverse landscape of transient phenomena. I will review some of the most recent discoveries – including extra-galactic analogs of the great eruption of Eta Carina, flares from the tidal disruption of stars by supermassive black holes, and the first electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave sources.
