The Formation of Hostile Worlds

Abstract : In this talk I will discuss the formation and early evolution of brown dwarfs and their planetary systems. Brown dwarfs are very low mass, substellar objects, some with masses comparable to those of giant planets. How they fit into our understanding of star and planet formation has been a topic of research for the past two decades. I will present these problems mainly from an observational point of view and show results based on observations with Kepler, ALMA, VLT, Subaru, Spitzer with an optimistic outlook to JWST.
