Title: Axial anomaly in the SU(N) Gauge Matrix Model
Abstract: We discuss the presence of a U(1) axial anomaly in the SU(N) gauge matrix model coupled to fermions. We show that the path integral measure is not invariant under a chiral rotation, and relate the non-invariance of the measure to the index of the Dirac operator in an instanton background. This breaks axial symmetry anomalously, with the residual symmetry being a finite group. For N_f flavours of fundamental fermions, the residual symmetry is Z_(2N_f) while for N_f flavours of adjoint fermions, it is Z_(4N_f).
