DIAS announces line-up for Culture Night 2021

A virtual tour of the world-renowned Dunsink observatory, exploring how Irish scientists monitor worldwide earthquakes and short talks showcasing the hidden treasures of Celtic literature are among the programme of events being hosted by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) as part of this year’s Culture Night, which takes place on Friday, 17th September.

Commenting today (08.09.21), Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said: “We are excited to announce our line-up for Culture Night 2021. We have put together a fascinating programme of events that showcases the work of DIAS researchers in a fun and accessible way. While we will miss not being able to host events in-person this year, it’s is great to be able to reach a wide audience across the country and share the interesting research that is happening at DIAS with them. Our Culture Night events are always a big hit and grow in popularity each year, so I would highly recommend members of the public book their place in advance.”

The DIAS Culture Night events include:

  • A Virtual Night Among the Stars: Join DIAS astrophysicists on a virtual tour of Dunsink, Ireland’s oldest astronomical observatory. There will also be ‘light-speed’ talks from leading astrophysicists and a fun Q&A session.
  • Treasures from the School of Celtic Studies Library: This series of short talks will showcase DIAS’s collection of manuscripts, manuscript facsimiles, and a selection of some of their most valuable early printed books. The talks will also a brief overview of the history of manuscript and print culture for the Irish language, and how these invaluable sources of literary heritage are now preserved physically and digitally by the School of Celtic Studies.
  • Earthquakes and Other Geohazards: Despite its lack of large earthquakes, Ireland holds a special place in the history of earthquake studies thanks to the pioneering 19th century work of Robert Mallet, often credited as the father of seismology. The Geophysics department of DIAS has maintained the Irish National Seismic Network since 2018 and is excited to discuss the past and present methods of monitoring live earthquakes worldwide this Culture Night.

All DIAS events at Culture Night are taking place on Zoom and are free to attend. For more details, and to register in advance, please see: https://www.dias.ie/events/
