9th to 13th May – 2016 National Data Centre (NDC) Workshop

The 2016 NDC Workshop is being organized by the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in cooperation with DIAS and the Government of Ireland.
It will be held in Dublin, Ireland, from 9 to 13 May 2016.
The workshop will be attended by more than 60 international experts from around the world who are currently involved in developing improved systems for the detection and analysis of nuclear test experiments throughout the world.

15th April 2016 – Earthquake on the island of Kyushu, Japan
A major M7.0 earthquake occurred on the island of Kyushu, Japan on 15th April 2016 at 16:25 UTC (01:25 on 16th April local time). A number of aftershocks have been recorded. A tsunami alert was issued for Japanese costal areas.
12th – 14th April 2016 Workshop “Contested Astrophysics”
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), with the support of an interdisciplinary grant from the Irish Research Council (WEXD – When Experts Disagree), will hold a specialist workshop from Tuesday 12th to Thursday 14th April 2016 examining some disputed areas of high-energy astrophysics.

4th to 6th April 2016 – Applied Geophysics Module at Dunsink Observatory
Staff from DIAS Geophysics developed and delivered an intensive, one-week, course recently on ‘Applied Geophysics’. The course was delivered to final year geology students of UCD and TCD. The course took place in Dunsink Observatory.
16th March 2016 – Source of high energy particles bombarding Earth identified

Incredibly high energy particles bombarding Earth are likely to be coming from a supermassive black hole located near the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, new research by an Irish based scientist and his colleagues has concluded.

19th to 21st February – 59th Irish Geological Research meeting

Scientists from the DIAS Geophysics section will attend the 59th Irish Geological Research meeting in Galway this weekend. They will present their research in such areas as: theoretical geophysics, geothermal research in Ireland and abroad, marine seismic research and more. 12th January 2016 – Senior Professor Chris Bean awarded SFI Research Infrastructure Award
Senior Professor Chris Bean, Head of the Geophysics Section in the School of Cosmic Physics, has been awarded a Science Foundation Ireland Research Infrastructure Award.
