Title: Tidal triggering of earthquakes.
Abstract: Better understanding of the conditions under which earthquake triggering takes place is an ongoing challenge in seismology. Most commonly, triggered events originate from crustal movement driven by regional tectonic forces. However, earthquakes can also be of a non-tectonic origin and result from stresses applied over a variety of time scales. Tidal forces generated by the gravitational attraction between Earth and the Moon and the Sun produce periodic stress variations that deform the Earth crust. Of all potential triggers for earthquake rupture, tides provide a unique opportunity to examine the response of the lithosphere to changes in stress that can be measured with high temporal and spatial accuracy. As a result, an investigation of the tidal triggering phenomenon can improve our understanding of conditions under which failures are initiated.
