Research Interests

Medieval Irish language, literature and poetry; medieval Irish palaeography and codicology.

Biographical Sketch

Chantal Kobel graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an honours degree in Early and Modern Irish. After completing a Masters in Archives and Records Management in UCD, she returned to Trinity College to do a PhD in Early Irish under the supervision of Dr. Jürgen Uhlich. Her thesis is a critical edition of the four versions of Aided Chonchobair ‘The Death-Tale of Conchobar’.

Dr Kobel received an O’Donovan Scholarship at the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 2017 and was subsequently awarded a Bergin Fellowship in 2019.

Her current project is a palaeographical and codicological study of the medieval Irish legal manuscripts in Trinity College Dublin Library, including the preparation of catalogue descriptions. She is also engaged in preparing a critical edition of a previously unpublished medieval Irish glossary and a selection of brief medieval Irish texts containing obscure vocabulary.

Dr Kobel teaches palaeography at the Department of Early Irish, Maynooth University.
