Thursday 13th June : STP Seminar – Geometry of branes from matrix models

Title: Geometry of branes from matrix models

Speaker: Takaki Matsumoto (DIAS)

Abstract: Matrix models are conjectured to give non-perturbative and constructive formulations of string and M theories. In the matrix models, various branes such as strings or membranes are described in terms of matrices. However, the relation between this description and the conventional description in terms of usual geometry remains to be completely elucidated. In this talk, we consider two approaches in order to understand this relation. The first approach is to construct the geometry of branes from matrices. In this approach, we propose a method of extracting a gauge connection and Riemannian metric on branes from matrices by introducing the Berry’s connection and information metric, which have been developed independently of the context of matrix models. The second approach is to construct matrices from the geometry of branes. In this approach, based on a quantization method which is called the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, we translate diffeomorphisms on branes into transformations of matrices and construct invariants under theses transformations. In both the approaches, we also show that our proposition works for several well-known matrix configurations.
