Light-speed talks from leading astrophysicists, a virtual tour of the world famous Dunsink Observatory, and delving into the geohazards of the modern world are among the programme of events being hosted by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) as part of this year’s Culture Night, which takes place on Friday, 18th September.
Commenting, Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said: “I am excited about the impressive line-up of events DIAS has put forward for this year’s Culture Night. It is a special Culture Night for DIAS this year, as we are celebrating our 80th anniversary. Therefore, it is fitting that our events highlight the broad range of pure and fundamental research DIAS does to support humankind answer the big questions of our time.”
The DIAS Culture Night events include:
• A Virtual Night Among the Stars: Join DIAS astrophysicists on a virtual tour of Dunsink, Ireland’s oldest astronomical observatory. The programme includes light-speed talks from astrophysicists on the big issues in astronomy, and a questions and answers session.
• Taifeadaí Cartlainne ó Scoil an Léinn Cheiltigh: Celtic Studies researchers will deliver a presentation as Gaeilge on the Glór project, which aims to digitise and publish archive recordings of Irish speakers made by DIAS during the 1950s and 1960s.
• Earthquakes and Other Geohazards: Despite experiencing few large earthquakes, Ireland holds a special place in the history of earthquake studies thanks to the pioneering work of Robert Mallet in the mid-19th century. Join DIAS geophysicists for three short talks on geohazards in the modern world including earthquakes, volcanoes, and groundwater.
Dr. Eucharia Meehan added: “This year Culture Night will be very different to normal, as all events have moved online due to Covid-19. DIAS has adapted to the challenge to ensure our events will continue to be as engaging and thought-provoking as ever for the public.”
All DIAS events at Culture Night are taking place on Zoom. For more details please see the links above.
