Columbia-DIAS-Yale Initiative Update

Updated 09 November 2023: The Columbia-DIAS-Yale (CDY) Initiative is a series of seminars and meetings established by Columbia University (New York), Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (Dublin), and Yale University (New Haven). After a summer break the seminar series resumed in September 2023. Seminars will continue bi-weekly until June 2024.

A workshop in New York on “Black Hole Flares” will be hosted by Columbia University and Center for Computational Astrophysics, Flatiron Institute, New York, USA, Nov 13-15, 2023. More information can be found here.

And finally for now, a CDY Summer School on High Energy Astrophysics will be hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Nucleare Physics, Heidelberg, in June 2024.

The CDY initiative aims to integrate the expertise of different physics/astrophysics communities towards the understanding of the nature of extreme accelerators of cosmic rays. CDY provides an opportunity to introduce motivated young researchers beginning their careers into this international research community, in particular PhD students and early career postdocs. The seminars address current topics in astroparticle physics, theory and phenomenology, observations, and interpretations. The upcoming fall series will focus on the topic “Gamma Ray Bursts – Gravitational Waves and Neutrinos”.

DIAS are proud to be part of such an important initiative that aligns with the work of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Section. Prof Felix Aharonian is co-chair of the initiative, and undertakes research on astroparticle and high-energy astroparticle physics. Dr Jonathan Mackey is also a member of the initiative, undertaking much of the local organisation. He is a Royal Society-SFI University Research Fellow in computational and high-energy astrophysics at DIAS Dunsink Observatory.

More information about the initiative can be found at their website, cdy-institute.ie. Previous seminars can also be found on the CDY YouTube channel here.
