Culture Night 2018 : Monitoring the Earth move

21st September 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 9:30 pm

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies is a statutory corporation established in 1940 under the Institute for Advanced Studies Act of that year. It is a publicly-funded independent centre for research in basic disciplines. The Geophysics Section studies the tectonic and dynamic structure of the Earth using the methods of physics combined with the other geosciences – geology, geochemistry, petrology, geochronology and paleoecology.

Despite its lack of large earthquakes, Ireland holds a special place in the history of Earthquake studies thanks to the pioneering work of Robert Mallet in the mid-19th century. Come see the past and present of live earthquake monitoring worldwide, from the heart of Dublin.

Time: 5pm – 9:30pm

Location: Geophysics Section, School of Cosmic Physics, 5 Merrion Square, Dublin 2
