Lockdown Lecture Series: Exploring the Sun-Earth Connection with ESA’s Solar Orbiter
28th May 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
The Sun is an active star that produces the light and heat that makes life possible here on Earth. From time to time it produces eruptions of hot gas that can travel though the solar system and impact the Earth, producing beautiful displays of the aurora borealis.
In addition, these “solar storms” can cause problems with communication and navigation systems and cause instabilities in power distribution networks. In February 2020, NASA launched the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter spacecraft to give us a better understanding of solar activity and how it can effect us here on Earth. In this talk, Professor Gallagher, head of Astrophysics at DIAS, will describe Solar Orbiter and how Irish scientists will use it to give us a better understanding of the Sun and its impacts on Earth.
The session will take place via Zoom link that will be sent to registered participants on the morning of the 28 May. Please email communications@dias.ie if you have registered but do not receive the link. It will be issued via the eventbrite system.
Presented by Professor Peter Gallagher, Head of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Section of the School of Cosmic Physics.
