Collaborations

“DIAS is part of a growing global network of institutes for advanced studies and, as such, is a clear demonstration internationally of Ireland’s long and continuing commitment to fundamental research…there is a strong international collaborative focus to our work and we have extensive networks of both national and international collaborators.”
DIAS Strategy 2018-2022

National Collaborations

Although DIAS Geophysics has a remit to focus on fundamental research, nonetheless through the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geoscience (iCRAG) and collaborations with the Geological Survey, Ireland (GSI) and other third level institutions, the geophysics section has strengthened its collaboration with industry partners, over recent years.

The Geophysics Section within DIAS operates and maintains the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN), since 2018 with support from the GSI.

INSN station map

The INSN operates since 1978 and currently comprises six permanent seismic stations. Station DSB is operated in collaboration with the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ, Germany) and station VAL is operated in collaboration with Met Eireann and GFZ. Data are transmitted from the seismic stations in real-time to the INSN data centre located in 5 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 and to our international partners GFZ, the British Geological Survey (BGS), ORFEUS and IRIS
