Near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, 11th March 2011, magnitude: 9.0
The catastrophic earthquake occurred off the northeastern coast of Japan (Tohoku Region) on 11th March 2011. Origin time 05:46:23 UTC, Location 38.322N, 142.369E, Magnitude 9.0Mb, Depth 32km. It was felt strongly in Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Tochigi Prefectures and caused much damage along the entire east coast of Honshu. A tsunami (max height 15-20m at Sendai) was generated that caused significant damage in Japan and was widely observed in the Pacific region. This major earthquake occurred as a result of thrust faulting near the subduction zone plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. Since March 11th 2011, many aftershocks with magnitudes greater than 5 have occurred. |
