Librarian/Archivist Internship at DIAS Dunsink Observatory. - close date is 2020-07-31

DIAS Dunsink Observatory ( is part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.

Situated in north-west Dublin, it has been recognised by the European Physical Society as a site of historical importance. There are many artefacts on site which are of immense interest, including items which reflect the legacy of the site’s most famous director Sir William Rowan Hamilton.

Some key pieces of astronomical equipment and special texts (including log books of astronomical observations) have been retained for display at public open nights. However, there are significant stores of books in two library rooms on the upper floors of the observatory which have been partially catalogued. We need an intern with expertise in library science to assist us with completing cataloguing of this treasured collection.
The work may include the following:
- Cataloguing the items
- Undertaking any necessary cleaning or conservation of items
- Identifying themes of interest which may inform future public exhibitions at Dunsink
- Identifying items which may require further conservation (and obtaining quotes for same)
- Arranging the archive in line with best practice for future consultation by researchers, astronomical enthusiasts, and the general public
- Production of a report at the end of the internship to summarise the work completed and any outstanding tasks for future.

Likely duration of role: 4 weeks in first instance, follow-up work later depending on what is required
Closing date: 31th of July

Pay offered: €1500 per month

Location: Dunsink Observatory is on Dunsink Lane, Dublin 15, close to Ashtown and Blanchardstown. The archivist would be expected to work on site at the observatory for the duration of the internship
