Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) Astronomy & Astrophysics Section working with the Solar Physics and Space Weather Group on the SURROUND cubesat mission and the STELLAR project. The Astronomy & Astrophysics Section is a vibrant and inclusive community of more than 40 researchers working on solar physics, space weather, planetary science, star formation, and high-energy astrophysics.
The successful applicant will be involved in a Phase 0 study of SURROUND, a proposed constellation of cubesats monitoring solar radio bursts. The spacecraft will identify and track solar storms and solar radio bursts as they travel through the inner solar system. More information about the mission can be found on the SURROUND webpage (dias.ie/surround).
The successful applicant will also be involved in the “Scientific and Technological Excellence by Leveraging LOFAR Advancements in Radio astronomy” (STELLAR) project with the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory and the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) funded by Horizon 2020. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of software and training of researchers for LOFAR operations and data analysis. More information on STELLAR can be found at lofar.bg/stellar.
This position is available for 1 year starting as soon as possible (preferably in May 2022). Remuneration is based on Science Foundation Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship team member budget scales (available here) and starting salary will depend on experience. Applicants need to have a PhD in solar physics, engineering, or a closely related field. A good command of English, to at least IELTS level 6.5, is required for international applicants. Experience with programming in Python is advantageous.
Interested candidates should submit an application on our online recruitment system by 5pm on 22 April 2022: dias.ie/applypostdocfellowship2022.
The application should consist of a CV (2 pages maximum), names of 2 referees, and a cover letter explaining their motivation and research interests (1 page maximum). Application queries can be sent to Dr Sophie Murray (sophie.murray ‘at’ dias.ie). Queries about the project work can be sent to Dr Shane Maloney (shane.maloney ‘at’ dias.ie) and Prof Peter Gallagher (peter.gallagher ‘at’ dias.ie).
