First Irish scientist elected as Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU)

An Irish scientist has been elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) – the world’s largest earth and space science society – for the first time. Senior Professor Emeritus at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) Alan Jones was elected to the AGU Fellowship on 15 August 2019.

He is among 62 scientists from international institutions elected as AGU Fellows this year. Election is considered an honour within the earth and space science community.

Professor Jones’ main research has focused on using deep-probing electromagnetic imaging technology to understand Earth processes through mapping structures.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Jones said: “I am truly honoured to have been elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.”

Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, congratulated Professor Jones on his appointment, saying: “It is a truly marvellous achievement for Alan.”
