Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Huybrighs’ research focuses on the moons of the outer planets and their interaction with the magnetospheres (magnetic bubbles) of their planets. Moon-magnetosphere interactions provide for an extremely rich variety of physics and are critical for understanding if the moons of the outer planets can support life. ‘

Dr. Huybrighs’ works with data collected by plasma and energetic ion detectors on NASA’s Galileo mission. Furthermore, his research involves simulations of space plasmas, in particular modelling (charged) particle dynamics. He is also involved in the scientific preparations of the JUpiter ICy moon Explorer (JUICE). Through his research he has revealed new insights in the moon-magnetosphere interaction, developed new pathways to study the atmospheres, plumes and oceans of moons as well as investigated how JUICE could sample Europa’s water plumes.

Dr. Huybrighs obtained his BSc (2012) and MSc (2015) in Aerospace Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. In 2018 he received his PhD degree from the Technical University of Braunschweig for work conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (Göttingen) and the Swedish Institute for Space Physics (Kiruna) on Jupiter’s moon Europa. In 2019 he moved to the European Space Agency (ESA/ESTEC) in the Netherlands where he took up a position as a Research Fellow. In 2022 he relocated to the Space and Planetary Science Center at Khalifa University (Abu Dhabi, UAE) for a position as postdoctoral fellow. He joined DIAS in 2023.
