DIAS Day Lecture – Professor Terry Hughes

Internationally acclaimed Marine scientist Professor Terry Hughes will deliver the annual DIAS Day Lecture on Friday, 18th June at 1pm on coral reef sustainability and the damaging effects of coral bleaching on climate change. The lecture is part of a series of events hosted by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) over 2020 and 2021, to mark its 80th anniversary.

Born in Dublin, Professor Terry Hughes is the Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University. In 2018 he was awarded the John Maddox Prize for his “courageous efforts in communicating research evidence on coral reef bleaching to the public”. In 2016 the science journal Nature, described him as one of the “10 people who mattered this year”.

His recent work has focused on marine ecology, macroecology, climate change, identifying safe planetary boundaries for human development, and on transformative governance of the sea in Australia, Chile, China, the Galapagos Islands, Gulf of Maine and the Coral Triangle.
